Help for Children from Jiri in Nepal

We take care of children in need that live in the village named Jiri in the Region of Dolakha in Nepal. Many children that live in this mountain region at the bottom of the Himalaya Mountain live in poverty. The kids often have to start working as porters to financially support their families.

The education of the kids is not first priority of the family, due to the bad economy and financial issues. The small numbers of schools are located more than a couple hours of walking distance apart from one another.

Jiri, the village our helping program is in, lies in the Dolakha District in the Himalaya-Region at the elevation of 2,000 m - around a day's drive away from Kathmandu. There are around 1,900 thousand households and around 7,400 residents.

Three base elements: Transparence, Familiarity & Sustainability

The concept of the Future Citizen targets to be local. We do not want to get too big and become other programs competitor. We are a supplementary program for underprivileged kids in Jiri with focus on accommodation and education.
By doing this we value transparency and as an organization maintain a familiar characteristic and create a long term effect for our program.

The Kids House

The children’s help program started in 2010 in the parent’s house of the founder , Bibi Funyal, in Jiri. All 25 kids were housed here until May 2015. The building was almost completely destroyed in an earthquake in May 2015. Currently, we are taking care of 32 children and teenagers aged 6 to 19 (Status 2020).

Our kids house in Kathmandu is presently being rented. As of 2024 we build our own children's house on an acquired property in Shankharapur, 15km east of the capital.

Education

For Kids a good education is key for a better future. Our vision: The establishment of a school up to 10th grade should decrease the number of uneducated children in the mountain region. We want to make sure, that the children that enter our program receive a certificate called “Secondary Education Examination - SEE” that is similar to the German secondary school graduation certificate.
This graduation is a prerequisite to obtain professional or further education opportunities. Around 25% of the students in Nepal made it to this level in 2013.
